The kids’ entertainment empire Disney is receiving a major backlash from conservatives over a number of “gay” and lesbian characters kissing on an episode that aired Monday – on one of its most popular cartoon programs, Stars vs. the Forces of Evil.
This is reportedly the first time in Disney’s history that it has portrayed such LGBT-friendly imagery in its programming, even though Disney XD has previously vowed to have a longstanding policy to be “inclusive” of all “genders.”
The homosexual content appears in what is seemingly just another episode depicting good and evil in a science fiction setting on one of its popular animated TV series.
“The animated show follows Star Butterfly – a teenage princess from another dimension – as she navigates high school, embarks on dimension-hopping adventures across the multiverse and battles arch-nemesis Ludo and his monstrous forces of evil alongside her best friend, Marco Diaz,” The Christian Post (CP) reports.
Before Stars vs. the Forces of Evil’s third season premiere, it has already been announced by Disney XD that the popular show – starring Eden Sher – will be continued for a fourth season
Promoting the LGBT lifestyle to kids
The objectional part of the cartoon takes place amidst a hodgepodge of the LGBT community coming to life via animation, complete with male and female homosexual couples and “transgenders.”
“In a scene where the characters sing ‘Just Friends’ while at a concert, several gay and lesbian couples are featured kissing,” CP’s Leonardo Blair explained. “Other characters appeared transgender.”
Reactions unleashed
Reaction to the pioneering moment for the LGBT community on Disney television soon began piling up from both sides of the political spectrum on social media.
“While gay advocate Christopher Scott Ferreira, a teleprompter operator at Fox Business in New York City, wrote ‘Thank you Disney’ on Facebook and celebrated with a gay pride flag and heart Wednesday, conservatives denounced the company for promoting an LGBT agenda,” Blair noted.
One concerned conservative issued a warning to Disney on Facebook about subliminally promoting the LGBT lifestyle through its popular animated program.
“When I was growing up, we didn’t have these kind of cartoons,” Janie Miles posted on Facebook. “They were simply fun entertainment with no built-in sexual agendas. I believe folks ought [to] be focused on something other than sex and their genitals … and our children’s genitals. Disney, you are getting ready to lose a chunk of change!”
Another fed-up consumer took to the popular social media channel to voice his contempt for the cartoon episode to Disney, which he now sees as the embodiment of all the immorality touted by Hollywood.
“Hollywood is such a disgusting cesspool,” Facebook user Dewayne Kester expressed. “There is nothing beneath them. No morals. No values. No God. These are the same people that praise and award pedophile actors and directors.”
A concerned mother announced that she was discerning enough to protect her children from being subjected to the homosexual kissing scene, noting that she was already aware of Disney’s liberal presentation of sexuality that she has previously witnessed for herself.
“[The Disney Channel has always been] off limits to my children [because of its] boy/girl dynamics,” Kimberly McClung asserted on Facebook.
One man used the social media giant to alert parents about Disney’s blatant promotion of sexual indecency and immorality.
“Parents, I urge you to drop your kids from watching Disney,” Demontre Dugger warned on Facebook. “They’re pushing that filth down the kids’ throats.”
Disney’s history of pro-LGBT content
Even though the on-screen same-sex public display of emotion on the popular animated series was a first for Disney, non-heterosexual relationships have reportedly been witnessed on a number of Disney’s television programs – such as lesbian partners appearing in Good Luck Charlie and a homosexual male couple seen in Gravity Falls, according to HeatStreet.
It has also been contended by numerous viewers that the popular animated Disney films Frozen, Finding Dory and Zootopia have portrayed homosexual characters.
The speculation of LGBT characters appearing in other Disney animated films was also reported by Cosmopolitan, which noted that Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, Ursula in The Little Mermaid, as well as Flora, Fauna and Merryweather in Sleeping Beauty, are homosexual.
However, such representations should not come as a surprise to viewers and other patrons, who are reminded on Disney’s website that a hallmark of the company’s policy is the inclusion of “diversity” in its stories, which is portrayed in its productions.
“The Disney brand has always been inclusive, with stories that reflect acceptance and tolerance and celebrate the differences that make our characters uniquely wonderful in their own way,” Disney’s policy states. “We constantly strive to live up to that legacy by continuing to create and share compelling storylines from our studios and media networks that entertain with inspirational and aspirational themes and reflect the incredibly rich diversity of the human experience,”
Expressed in the language of inclusion, Disney goes on to imply that its content does not just represent and appeal to traditional gender roles.
