If you thought Mark Zuckerberg was going to apologize for Facebook influencing the 2016 election and handing a victory to Donald Trump, you would be mistaken. Despite a new theory that the rise in fake news appearing on Facebook and then going viral influenced would-be voters, Zuckerberg hasn’t allowed his company to be blamed.
Facebook faces the prospect of losing a large block of advertisers in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica data scandal.
Cambridge Analytica headquarters raided by British data regulators
“ISBA, a group representing about 3,000 advertisers including major brands like Unilever and Procter & Gamble, is demanding answers from Facebook in the wake of the Cambridge,” Fox News reported.
The companies ISBA represents in the United Kingdom are threatening to abandon Facebook unless their concerns are addressed.
“We want to understand the scope of the inquiry Mark Zuckerberg announced yesterday. We want reassurances for our members that it will get to the bottom of the issues and any implications for the public and for advertisers,” Phil Smith, ISBA’s director general, told Fox News in a statement.
The trade group is slated to meet with representatives from the social media platform on Friday.
“I think that clients have come to a point, quite rightly, where enough is enough,” said David Kershaw, the head of the major advertising agency M&C Saatchi.
Facebook founder CEO Mark Zuckerberg broke his silence regarding the Cambridge Analytica controversy in both a lengthy statement posted to Facebook on Wednesday and in an interview with CNN.
Zuckerberg Scrambles To Calm Facebook Employees
Following a horrendous week of damage control through a choreographed game of MSM softball, Mark Zuckerberg is now trying to calm down Facebook employees in the wake of a massive data harvesting scandal.
“We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you,” Zuckerberg wrote in the post.
“The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago,” he continued. “But we also made mistakes, there’s more to do, and we need to step up and do it.”
Cambridge University researcher Aleksandr Kogan harvested users’ data through a personality quiz app beginning in 2013, Zuckerberg recounted.
Kogan then allegedly shared the data regarding users’ friends and affinities with Cambridge Analytica, which turned around and used that information to help its consulting clients, including Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
Facebook is going the way of MySpace! They forgot people are fickle that we have other options for communication. Facebook is rapidly losing users, kids don't use Facebook, grandmother's do. Twitter will eventually face MySpace fate as well. Their perpetual meddling with algorithms and speech codes just drive people and paying customers away.
In a Facebook message he posted on Wednesday, Zuckerberg said progress does not move in a straight line and that the country should “go work even harder.” His status update officially was: “Feeling hopeful.”
As Facebook faces a crisis related to a user data scandal and the 2016 election, it seems appropriate to reflect on Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg telling Clinton campaign manager John Podesta that she wanted Hillary to “win badly.”
In a May 2015 email thread, Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager John Podesta offered his condolences for the sudden death of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s husband, Dave Goldberg. Sandberg thanked Podesta for his kind words, then affirmed her desire to “help” Clinton win the 2016 election. She mentioned a home visit where Clinton interacted with her children. “I still want HRC [Hillary Rodham Clinton] to win badly,” she wrote. “I am still here to help as I can. She came over and was magical with my kids.”
Previous batches of leaked emails revealed that Sandberg offered to put Podesta in contact with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, stating that Zuckerberg was interested in influencing policies relating to “social oriented objectives (like immigration, education or basic scientific research).” Podesta appears to have at leasSilicon Valley has long seemed to be working in favor of the left, Facebook has a history of censoring anti-Hillary Clinton content, while WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange stated that Google was “directly engaged” in the Clinton campaign. Google has also been accused of censoring search results that may paint Clinton in a negative light.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also been politically active since 2013, when he co-founded a 501(c)3 called “FWD.us,” primarily lobbying for expansion of the H-1B visa program and amnesty for illegal immigrants. The organization has not openly endorsed Clinton’s “dream,” revealed in a private speech to a Brazilian bank, of “a hemispheric common market, with open trade and open borders,” but it forcefully attacked Donald Trump’s stance of strong border security, including a physical wall. Zuckerberg also made waves when he appeared to be on a Presidential campaign tour of the country leading to rumors that he may be running for President himself.
Facebook appeared to show a pro-Clinton bias throughout the 2016 election, with moderators deleting or banning innocuous content which criticized Clinton, including a whole community page that mocked her, and the personal profiles of users with pro-Trump opinions. When Wikileaks released emails exposing the Democratic National Committee’s sabotage of Clinton’s primary rival Bernie Sanders, the site blocked users from sharing links to the leak. When Wikileaks complained, Facebook said the suppression of those links was an “accident.”
t arranged that meeting; his assistant emailed him in August 2015 with directions to Zuckerberg’s office.Further emails showed a meeting between Sandberg and Podesta was organized to “step through the research on gender and leadership by women.”
In another email, Sandberg told Podesta that 2015 was a challenging year but thanked him for his help and support. She also stated, “[I] Look forward to working with you to elect the first woman President of the United States.”
