Rev. Franklin Graham recently condemned the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for categorizing a number of nationally recognized Christian organizations as “hate groups.”
The president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) believes that it is absolutely ridiculous that respected pro-family groups are being targeted by the ultra-Left organization – and getting away with it.
"Why? … Simply because they hold to the teaching of God's Word on moral issues such as homosexuality and same-sex marriage," Graham posted on his Facebook account.
Legal action against SPLC was recently announced over the matter.
“D. James Kennedy Ministries has filed a federal religious discrimination lawsuit against SPLC for calling it a hate group,” CBN News informed.
Smearing those exposing the Left
Graham also mentioned how SPLC slighted the respected author and activist, Ayaan Hirsi, while rebuking the Leftist group’s latest attack.
"They (Southern Poverty Law Center) even speak disparagingly against Ayaan Hirsi Ali – a woman who was born into a Muslim family in Somalia and bravely speaks out against the dangers and oppression of women in Islam," the North Carolina evangelist noted in his post. "Because she dares to speak against what Islam has done to her and other women, she is being accused of hate speech!"
A piece published by a prominent American newspaper was also noted by Graham.
"As Kimberley Strassel said in the The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), 'If the SPLC doesn't agree with your views, it tags you as a hater,'" the son of world-renowned evangelist Billy Graham continued in his post. "The SPLC has the funding of Apple CEO Tim Cook and financial giant J.P. Morgan, and is a media favorite. Who is the real hate group here?"
In the op-ed about which Graham writes, the SPLC’s financial motivation behind its listing was highlighted.
“Corporate America will do almost anything to stay on the safe side of public opinion – at least as it’s defined by the media,” WSJ’s Kimberly A. Strassel asserted in her article published late last month. “CEOs will apologize, grovel, resign, settle. They will even, as of this month, legitimize and fund an outfit that exists to smear conservatives.”
She then went into specifics.
“The notorious Southern Poverty Law Center is quietly cashing in on the tragedy, raking in millions on its spun-up reputation as a group that fights hate,’” Strassel continued. “Apple CEO Tim Cook informed employees that his company is giving $1 million to SPLC and matching employee donations. J.P. Morgan Chase is pitching in $500,000, specifically to further the SPLC’s ‘work in tracking, exposing and fighting hate groups and other extremist organizations,’ in the words of Peter Scher – the bank’s head of corporate responsibility.”
Ignoring the facts
It is stressed that the SPLC makes no attempt to hide its partisan ties.
“An honest outfit tracking violent groups would keep to straightforward descriptions and facts,” Strassel pointed out. “Instead, the SPLC’s descriptions of people are brutally partisan, full of half-truths and vitriol designed to inspire fury.”
The non-objective – and expressly subjective – “hate” list published by SPLC is condemned as being rooted in baseless and false accusations.
“What Mr. Scher is referring to is the SPLC’s ‘Hate Map,’ – its online list of 917 American ‘hate groups,’” Strassel explained. “The SPLC alone decides who goes on the list, but its criteria are purposely vague.”
The true criterial for appearing on the list was then divulged.
“Since the SPLC is a far-Left activist group, the map comes down to this: If the SPLC doesn’t agree with your views, it tags you as a hater,” she insisted.
It was then noted how corporate America uses groups in need of money to forward their progressive agendas.
“Let’s not mince words: By funding this list, J.P. Morgan and Apple are saying they support labeling Christian organizations that oppose gay marriage as ‘hate groups,’” Strassel impressed. “That may come as a sour revelation to any bank customers who have donated to the Family Research Council (a mainstream Christian outfit on the SPLC’s list) or whose rights are protected by the Alliance Defending Freedom (which litigates for religious freedom and is also on the list).”
